Vietnam wants to export fruit valued at $5 billion by 2025 and $6.5 billion by 2030 as it concentrates on product diversification and quality enhancement to boost official shipments to China and other countries.
The project highlighted the recently authorized 2025 and 2030 development goals for fruit trees from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Dragon fruit, mango, banana, litchi, longan, orange, grapefruit, pineapple, rambutan, durian, jackfruit, passion fruit, avocado, and custard apple were chosen as the 14 fruit plants that would be the focus of the study.
By 2025, Viet Nam will have 1.2 million hectares dedicated to fruit farming, yielding 14 million tonnes overall. According to the calculations, there would be more than 960,000 hectares of plantations for key fruits, yielding a total of 11–12 million tonnes.
The plantation area would grow to 1.3 million by 2030 and produce 16 million tonnes.
The ministry has tasked its Plant Protection Department with working with locals to manage fruit tree diseases, advising localities on how to create planting area codes and traceability of products, and collaborating with units on growing fruit product export markets.
It will work alongside businesses and communities to lower trade barriers, open up new markets, advance science and technology transfer, assist farmers in gaining access to capital, create concentrated fruit-growing regions, and create deep processing facilities to diversify product offerings and raise quality.
Promoting formal exports to China would be the main objective, with expansion into other markets like Japan, the US, Canada, the Republic of Korea, Russia, ASEAN, the EU, the Middle East, and North Africa also being considered.
The expansion of fruit exports was primarily dependent on China, which has a population of 1.4 billion people, according to Ng Phc Nguyên, general secretary of the Vietnam Fruit Association. China is currently Vietnam’s largest fruit consumption market.
Nguyên noted that despite efforts to grow into new markets, Vit Nam’s fruit export decreased as China tightened regulations to combat the COVID-19 outbreak this year.
According to statistics from the Import-Export Department, Viet Nam exported fruit to China for around $1 billion in the period from January to September of last year, a decrease of more than 30%.
Vietnam exported fruit to China 57% of the time in 2021, but just 44% of the time this year.
Therefore, encouraging official export to China was crucial to expanding fruit export.
The Chinese side and the Vietnamese government were negotiating to expand the market for some Vietnamese agricultural products.
Most recently, after nearly six years of negotiations, China authorized the official import of durian from Vietnam. The General Department of Customs of China additionally concurred to test the entry of passion fruit from Vietnam beginning on July 1.
Fresh pomelo from Vietnam was also officially permitted to enter the US, moving up to the seventh fruit after mango, longan, lychee, dragon fruit, rambutan, and star apple.
Twelve different fruit varieties from Vietnam were permitted entry into high-end markets including Japan and the EU in addition to the US market.
In order to ensure the quality of fresh fruits when shipped to distant markets like the US and Europe, Nguyên believes that Vietnam should invest in post-harvest technology and expand the logistics infrastructure for fruits.
According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, the dragon fruit generated $463 million in export earnings for Vietnam in the first eight months of this year, followed by $237 million for bananas and $158 million for durian.
